The Rival Sons frontman discusses his debut solo album, Weapons Of Beauty, written during a season of isolation in the Mojave Desert and recorded with nine-time GRAMMY-winning producer Dave Cobb in Nashville. Weapons Of Beauty is shaped by solitude, devotion, faith, doubt and love, anchored by Buchanan’s unique voice. Written during a season of isolation in the Mojave Desert, Weapons Of Beauty is an honest exploration of faith, doubt, and grace.

“I had to go through this long process of uncovering this vulnerability and illustrating it in such a way to make that vulnerability powerful,” Jay says on his songwriting process. “Being out in the desert like that, I was out there to write my songs, and not have the luxury of being part of a gang, and leaning on your brother. It's very different, it's very exposed. I was trying to make sure that I write from that.”

In this intimate acoustic session, Jay delivers soulful live performances of songs like “Caroline” and “Sway,” a dynamic vocal delivery with a stripped-down acoustic accompaniment, highlighting the visceral power of his vocals.

“Creating joy, and dancing your way to the grave is important to me. And looking at these things as weapons of beauty, instead of art and this vulnerability being something that is frail—it’s not frail. It’s powerful. And I wanted to claim that.”
