Baggs Through the Years

Baggs Begins

1975

Lloyd Baggs begins hand-building guitars using a scientific method, studying violin-making literature to understand modes, stiffness, and structural resonance, while experimenting with early carbon fiber bracing.

The LB6 Makes History

1980s

The LB6 becomes LR Baggs’ first official pickup, engineered to deliver high-quality sound in a form that could fit a normal guitar saddle while preserving the purity of the acoustic tone.

The Garage Years

1987

The Baggs family relocated from downtown Los Angeles to California's Central Coast and established their business in a small garage. Those early years were filled with experimentation, perseverance and a hands-on approach to product development that would lead to many breakthroughs, including the TeleAcoustic.

Godin & the TeleAcoustic

1988

With Robert Godin, LR Baggs created the TeleAcoustic—built on the patented Acoustic Resonator design, the guitar became the company‘s second patent. Prototyped in the family garage from a Tele-style kit guitar, it became a commercial success and remains sought-after today, cementing LR Baggs as a pioneer in acoustic-electric innovation.

The Original Duet

1989

Inspired by two-way hi-fi speakers, LR Baggs introduces the original Duet, using a crossover to pair high-frequency mic clarity with low-end pickup punch. Baggs champions non-invasive soundhole controllers, saving players from cutting holes in their beloved instruments.

A New Studio Standard

1990s

LR Baggs develops high-fidelity, studio-grade circuitry specifically for live performers, resulting in the iconic Para Acoustic DI. Built like a tank, this DI quickly becomes an indispensable tool in the rigs of gigging musicians worldwide.

All-Star Innovation

2000s

Innovations in pickup technology and discrete circuitry lead to the creation of Baggs’ best-selling Element Active System and Venue DI pedal.

The M1 Is Born

2005

Baggs releases the patented, body-sensitive M1 Soundhole Pickup. Its signature cream housing and natural body resonance make it an instant cult classic, and it becomes the go-to soundhole pickup for major players like Tom Petty, David Gilmour, and Jeff Tweedy.

Anthem & Acoustic Effects

2010s

The Anthem System changes live acoustic sound forever by combining the Element Undersaddle Pickup with the noise-canceling TRU•MIC capsule. Later in the 2010s, the Align Series pedal family puts studio effects and tools at the player’s feet.

High-Fidelity for All

2020s

The HiFi Pickup family is released, using lightweight bridge-plate sensors to preserve the natural acoustic energy of the guitar without altering its structure.

The Baggs Guitar

2024

Lloyd Baggs returns to his luthier roots with the AEG-1 Acoustic Electric Guitar. With thin-body ergonomics and a structure that was designed to plug in and play, the Baggs guitar solves the perennial struggle of playing authentic acoustic tone on live stages.

In Los Angeles in the 70s, a young luthier named Lloyd Baggs was in a downtown loft building his first pickups, driven by a desire to get the best amplified sound out of the beautiful handbuilt guitars he was crafting for LA’s top musicians. His curiosity and obsessive pursuit of excellence led to the creation of groundbreaking innovations. LR Baggs was born, a family business that creates high-quality products built to give real working musicians tools they can trust.

Baggs is more than just the family name on the door; it’s a family vision that drives what we do and how we do it. Lloyd and Nadine have created a tight-knit workshop where most team members have worked for a decade or more. This is the kind of long-term relationship we strive to build with everyone who uses our pickup systems, guitars, and effects.

Attention to detail is at the heart of our everyday lives at Baggs. Lloyd attributes his pursuit of excellence to his time working as a fine art master printer, where any imperfection, no matter how small, was enough to stop the project and start all over again. From our design philosophy to production, to artist support and customer service, every Baggs innovation comes from listening to real players fighting real challenges on stage. Our QC process is unrelenting: we test our products against a calibrated reference standard, putting our circuitry through a specialized matrix to test every function. We high-grade our microphones and critical board components to achieve a consistent sound and performance from every product. We take great pride in ensuring our customers can truly feel the value and care built into every product, with the ultimate confidence that their gear is ready for the show.
